RAS represents a genuinely welfare-positive direction for aquaculture development relative to open-net pen systems. The ability to maintain optimal water temperature, oxygen and quality parameters continuously addresses one of the most significant sources of chronic fish stress in conventional aquaculture. Elimination of sea lice without chemical treatment removes both the parasite burden on fish and the welfare cost of chemical treatments. The enclosed environment also eliminates weather-related mortality events and reduces disease introduction from wild fish. The welfare case for RAS is robust, and the primary barriers to wider adoption are capital costs and energy intensity rather than welfare concerns.
