Urban deer populations are growing across the world. Their welfare challenges differ significantly from rural counterparts and require tailored management strategies.
Urban deer present a welfare management challenge distinct from rural contexts. Their habituation to humans creates welfare risks — reduced flight distance makes them more vulnerable to dogs, disturbance, and deliberate harm — while their presence in human-managed spaces raises conflicts around garden damage, road safety, and competition with other wildlife. The welfare of individual deer must be balanced against the ecological welfare of green spaces that support diverse other species. Lethal control in urban areas is politically contentious and practically difficult; fertility control programmes have been trialled with mixed results. The welfare-optimal approach involves evidence-based population monitoring, habitat management to reduce carrying capacity where ecologically necessary, and public education to prevent feeding that increases habituation and dependency.
