Camera traps are powerful conservation research tools. Their deployment raises underappreciated welfare considerations for the animals they monitor and can affect behaviour and stress if poorly managed.
Camera trapping sits in a grey zone of wildlife research ethics. The conservation value of the data generated is substantial, and when deployed with care, camera traps cause minimal disturbance. However, poor deployment practices — white flash at high density, baiting that creates food dependency, placement at water sources during drought — can cause measurable welfare harm. The welfare-conscious researcher selects infrared cameras, deploys at low density in sensitive areas, avoids baiting or uses it only where justified and monitored, and considers the cumulative effect of long-term monitoring on individual animal behaviour. As camera trapping scales globally, developing and adopting welfare guidelines analogous to those for animal research in laboratories is an important frontier for wildlife research ethics.
