Welfare Considerations

The male dairy calf is the most prominent ethical blind spot in the dairy supply chain. The lives of the male calves born as a co-product of dairy production are largely invisible to consumers who purchase milk, butter and cheese without awareness of their origin. Killing at birth, while legally permissible where done humanely, represents a significant welfare and ethical cost. Rearing bull calves in high-welfare rose veal systems addresses this by giving each animal a life worth living before slaughter. Sexed semen adoption reduces the problem at source.
