A farm with excellent facilities but poor stockmanship delivers worse welfare than a farm with modest facilities and skilled, compassionate handlers. Training programmes that combine attitude change — helping workers understand and care about the welfare impacts of their behaviour — with technical skill development in low-stress handling produce the most durable improvements. The commercial incentive is aligned: calmer animals are easier to handle, less prone to injury, and more productive across all production measures.
