Individual bees exposed to field-realistic doses of neonicotinoids experience impaired navigation, learning, and memory — impacts that translate to reduced foraging efficiency, increased energy expenditure, and colony-level productivity decline. Whether these impacts constitute welfare harm in a morally relevant sense depends on the evidence for bee sentience, which is accumulating. The precautionary case for minimising bee pesticide exposure is strong regardless of the welfare framing: sublethal effects impair the foraging and pollination functions that make bees ecologically and economically valuable. Regulatory systems that assess only acute lethality are systematically underestimating pesticide risk to bees.
