Gerbils are popular small pets that are often housed inadequately. Understanding their social needs, space requirements, and cognitive complexity enables far better welfare outcomes.
Gerbil welfare, like hamster welfare, suffers from a significant gap between what pet industry products provide and what welfare science recommends. Standard small-animal cages sold for gerbils are too small, provide insufficient substrate depth for burrowing, and often house single animals when gerbils are social animals with genuine companionship needs. The stereotype of gerbils as low-maintenance, low-welfare-significance pets has produced generations of animals living in inadequate conditions. Gerbils are intelligent, curious animals that in appropriate environments — large enclosures with deep substrate, compatible companions, and varied enrichment — show a rich repertoire of natural behaviour. Education at point of sale and access to accurate welfare guidance are the most important systemic interventions for gerbil welfare improvement.
