Quail are among the most intensively farmed birds globally, yet they remain outside many mainstream animal welfare frameworks and receive little regulatory attention.
Commercial quail farming largely operates outside the welfare protections applied to chickens and other poultry in many jurisdictions. Extreme stocking densities, inadequate lighting, beak trimming without pain relief, and near-total absence of environmental enrichment are common features of intensive quail facilities. Research into quail sentience and stress responses lags behind that of chickens, leaving welfare standards poorly evidenced. Welfare improvements in quail farming represent a significant and neglected opportunity.
