Organic pig farming, when well managed, provides substantial welfare benefits through outdoor access, enrichment, lower stocking densities, and the ability to express rooting and exploratory behaviour. However, organic certification covers a wide range of management standards, and some organic farms perform poorly on welfare indicators. Outdoor pigs face different welfare risks including heat stress, parasites, and predation. The welfare quality of organic pig products depends on active management as much as certification, making transparent outcome-based welfare reporting more informative than label claims alone.
