Cognitive Enrichment for Farmed Fish

Emerging research shows that farmed fish benefit from environmental enrichment that stimulates cognitive engagement, with positive effects on welfare and production outcomes.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Fish cognition research has revealed that farmed species have greater learning and problem-solving capacity than previously recognised. Environmental enrichment that challenges fish cognitively — such as variable feeding regimes, objects to investigate, and spatial complexity — reduces stereotypic behaviour, aggression, and physiological stress markers. These welfare improvements also have production benefits through reduced fin damage and improved feed conversion. The barrier to adoption is more cultural than economic, requiring a shift in how the aquaculture industry conceptualises fish as sentient animals with psychological as well as physical needs.
