Companion reptiles are among the most veterinary-underserved animals in human care — many owners lack access to reptile-competent veterinarians, and reptile health problems often go undetected and untreated.
Reptile welfare in captivity is a largely invisible crisis. Metabolic bone disease — caused by inadequate UVB lighting and calcium — creates progressive skeletal deformity and pain in a majority of captive reptiles over time. Respiratory infections, parasite loads, and thermal stress compound this. Owners frequently cannot access veterinary care even when they recognize problems, and most reptiles showing symptoms of illness have been suffering for weeks or months before detection. The combination of stoicism, complex husbandry requirements, and veterinary access gaps creates chronic, widespread suffering.
