Welfare Considerations

Marine debris causes acute and chronic suffering in seabirds at global scale. Entanglement in ghost fishing gear causes drowning, injury, and starvation in large pelagic species. Plastic ingestion causes internal injury and toxic exposure that is individually painful and epidemiologically devastating. The suffering of individual birds — from struggling against entanglement to slow starvation from a gut full of plastic — is enormous and largely invisible. Reducing plastic production and improving fisheries gear management are the highest-impact systemic interventions, but beach cleaning, wildlife rescue funding, and consumer pressure also contribute meaningfully.
