Adequate water access is a fundamental welfare requirement for pigs, yet water restriction, inadequate drinker provision, and poor water quality are common welfare failures in intensive pig systems.
Water is the most essential nutrient for pig welfare, and failures of provision — whether through inadequate drinker numbers, insufficient flow rates, equipment malfunction, or poor water quality — cause rapid and serious welfare harm. In high-stocking-density systems, competition for limited drinker access means subordinate pigs are consistently deprived. Automated monitoring of water consumption can provide early warning of health problems as well as welfare failures. Regular inspection of drinker function, adequate drinker provision per pig, and water quality testing are non-negotiable welfare basics that are more often failed than commonly recognised.
