Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) are increasingly used for trout production, offering environmental benefits but also creating specific welfare challenges related to water quality and density management.
RAS aquaculture offers genuine environmental advantages over open-net systems, but welfare outcomes depend entirely on operational management quality. When water quality parameters are maintained within optimal ranges and stocking densities are appropriate, RAS trout welfare can be good. However, equipment failures or management errors cause rapid deterioration in water quality that acutely stresses fish. High recirculation ratios can concentrate stress hormones in the water, creating a welfare feedback loop. The complexity of RAS management requires highly trained operators and robust monitoring systems to prevent welfare failures that can affect entire stock populations simultaneously.
