Cognitive science applied to cattle is revealing mental capacities that fundamentally challenge the assumption that cattle are passive experience-free organisms. Studies demonstrating emotional contagion, optimism bias, and social learning show that cattle have subjective experiences that matter morally. Welfare conditions that produce negative cognitive biases — characterised by pessimistic judgement in ambiguous situations — indicate chronic negative affective states. This research provides a scientific basis for assessing positive welfare beyond the absence of suffering.
