Welfare Considerations

Urban swift conservation through nest box installation, building regulations requiring swift bricks in new construction, and sympathetic renovation of older buildings addresses the root cause. The welfare of swift populations is entirely dependent on human choices about how we build and renovate our built environment.

What You Can Do

Install swift nest boxes on suitable south-facing walls or under eaves at least five metres above ground
Advocate for local planning authorities to require swift bricks in new construction and renovation projects
Join or support your local swift conservation group to participate in nest monitoring and awareness raising
Use the RSPB swift mapper or equivalent apps to record swift activity and nesting sites in your area
Avoid disturbing swift nesting sites during the breeding season from May to August
