Welfare Considerations

Enclosures without sufficient depth for burrowing prevent expression of a fundamental natural behaviour. Gerbils are also sensitive to disrupted circadian rhythms from inappropriate lighting. Same-sex pairs from the same litter or carefully bonded pairs provide the social housing these animals require. Responsible gerbil keeping requires research and commitment that the typical pet shop purchase experience does not encourage.
