Many parrot and other companion bird species are highly social animals whose welfare is severely compromised by solitary housing.
Companion birds, especially parrots, are among the most socially and cognitively complex of all pet species. Their welfare needs are frequently misunderstood by owners who may not appreciate the degree of social contact, mental stimulation, and environmental complexity required. Isolation in a cage with limited interaction causes chronic stress that manifests as feather-destructive behaviour, excessive vocalisations, aggression, and repetitive stereotypic movements. These behaviours are often misinterpreted as personality traits rather than welfare indicators. The trade in companion parrots continues to fuel both wild capture and intensive breeding of birds whose needs most captive environments fundamentally cannot meet.
