Transforming the global food system is the most impactful lever for improving the lives of the billions of farm animals slaughtered each year.
The scale of animal suffering in the global food system is almost incomprehensible — tens of billions of sentient animals are raised and killed each year, the majority in conditions that cause significant and chronic welfare harms. Incremental improvements to how animals are kept, while valuable, cannot address the fundamental problem of a system designed to maximise production efficiency at the expense of animal welfare. Meaningful reform requires systemic change: shifting subsidies from intensive animal agriculture toward plant-based and alternative protein production, reforming trade rules to enforce welfare standards, and creating economic conditions that make higher welfare food affordable for all consumers. This is long-term work requiring coalition across advocacy, policy, and industry.
