Precision livestock farming technology represents a significant opportunity to improve animal welfare in large-scale commercial systems where individual monitoring by stockpersons is physically impossible. By continuously collecting data on movement, eating, drinking, social behaviour, and physiological indicators, automated systems can detect welfare problems earlier than traditional observation, allowing faster intervention. The welfare benefit of earlier detection is significant — a lame dairy cow detected and treated one day earlier experiences substantially less suffering. However, technology is a tool, not a solution in itself: its welfare benefit depends entirely on farmers acting promptly on alerts and using the information to improve management rather than simply to generate data. The integration of PLF welfare indicators into farm assurance and premium certification schemes creates economic incentives for adoption.
