Lame sheep suffer silently, as prey animals mask pain to avoid appearing vulnerable. By the time lameness is visible to casual inspection, the condition is often advanced and harder to treat. Automated scanning systems that analyse walking patterns can detect subtle asymmetries weeks before clinical signs appear, allowing proactive treatment. Combined with improved foot bathing protocols and genetic selection for foot conformation, these technologies represent a significant welfare improvement for one of the largest farmed animal populations.
