Ferrets are intelligent, social mustelids with specific husbandry requirements and a predisposition to several serious health conditions that require informed owner care.
Ferret welfare is frequently compromised by owners unaware of the species-specific health challenges that emerge in mid-life. The near-universal neutering of ferrets at a young age, driven by commercial breeding practices, is associated with the very high rates of adrenal disease seen in North American ferret populations. European ferrets, where early neutering is less common, show much lower rates of this condition. Dietary quality is another major welfare issue, as ferrets fed carbohydrate-heavy kibble from a young age develop insulin resistance contributing to insulinoma. Owner education at the point of purchase is critical to preventing preventable suffering.
