The stocking of fish into lakes, ponds, and rivers for recreational angling raises complex welfare questions about transport stress, habitat suitability, and the condition of stocked fish.
Recreational angling fish stocking receives little welfare scrutiny despite involving large numbers of fish and clear welfare risks. Hatchery fish raised in high-density, food-abundant, predator-free environments are ill-prepared for release into natural environments. Their physiological and behavioural differences from wild fish leave them vulnerable to thermal stress, nutritional deficiency, and predation. Transport mortality and post-stocking mortality can be high, but is rarely monitored systematically. Welfare-conscious stocking practices would require habitat suitability assessment, water quality monitoring, and appropriate stocking densities calibrated to carrying capacity.
