Birds rely on vocalisation for virtually every critical life function including territorial defence, mate attraction, parent-chick coordination, and predator alarm. Noise pollution that degrades the transmission of these signals imposes a chronic welfare cost by forcing birds to expend additional energy adapting their songs, reducing breeding success, and increasing stress. Birds in heavily noise-polluted areas show elevated glucocorticoid levels consistent with chronic stress even when food and cover resources are adequate. Noise reduction policies developed for human health co-benefit bird welfare significantly, making this a case where human and animal welfare goals align strongly.
