Lying time is one of the most sensitive indicators of dairy cow welfare and one of the most easily measured. Cows are highly motivated to lie down, and when prevented from doing so, they become increasingly stressed and their health deteriorates rapidly. The design of resting areas is therefore a critical welfare determinant in dairy systems. Cubicle dimensions, neck rail position, kerb height, and bedding depth all influence whether cows choose to lie in stalls or stand in uncomfortable compromises. Regular assessment of lying time using accelerometer leg tags is now affordable and provides continuous welfare monitoring data that allows early intervention before problems escalate.
