Decades of intensive genetic selection for fast growth and high leanness in pigs have created welfare problems that now require deliberate reversal through welfare-focused breeding programmes.
The welfare consequences of decades of productivity-focused genetic selection are now well documented. Pigs bred for extreme leanness suffer leg and joint problems; those selected for large litter sizes face chronic energy deficit and high piglet mortality; fast growth creates cardiovascular and metabolic stress. Welfare-positive genetics programmes now aim to select simultaneously for productivity and welfare traits including leg strength, temperament, disease resistance, and maternal behaviour. This requires longer breeding cycles and may reduce short-term productivity, creating a market incentive problem that policy intervention or consumer demand for higher-welfare products can help resolve.
