Growing scientific research into pain and nociception in invertebrates is informing welfare policy but also revealing the significant gaps in our understanding of how most animals on Earth experience the world.
Invertebrate pain research is one of the most scientifically interesting and practically important frontiers in animal welfare. The challenge is methodological: pain involves both nociception (detection of harmful stimuli) and subjective experience, and demonstrating the latter requires behavioural and neurological evidence that is difficult to interpret across the vast diversity of invertebrate nervous systems. Recent research using cognitive bias paradigms — showing that bees in simulated stress adopt pessimistic rather than optimistic response biases — provides evidence of emotional states that goes beyond simple reflex responses. This research has direct policy implications: if bees can experience something analogous to anxiety, the scale of potential suffering in global insect populations from agriculture, habitat loss, and pesticide use becomes ethically significant in entirely new ways.
