Parasitism — particularly haemonchosis from the barber pole worm — is the primary cause of production loss and welfare suffering in tropical and subtropical extensive systems, and managing it effectively requires both understanding the parasite lifecycle and implementing targeted treatment strategies to slow resistance development. Kidding welfare in extensive systems depends critically on shelter availability, monitoring capacity, and the experience of stockpeople in recognising and assisting difficult births. The social and behavioural needs of goats — their curiosity, their preference for varied terrain, and their social bonding — are generally better met in extensive than intensive systems, but only when stocking density, pasture management, and predator pressure allow animals to express natural behaviour without chronic stress.
