Colony collapse disorder and the broader decline of managed and wild bee populations has welfare implications for billions of individual insects, and the causes involve complex interactions between pesticides, pathogens, and habitat loss.
Honeybee welfare involves both ecological and individual welfare dimensions. Colony collapse and population decline represent conservation crises affecting ecosystem function, but the billions of individual bees involved also have welfare significance if they experience states analogous to suffering. Research on bee cognitive bias suggests emotional-state-like conditions exist in bees, supporting welfare consideration alongside conservation concern. Managed honeybee welfare specifically is affected by beekeeping practices: colony transportation for commercial pollination causes stress; honey extraction may be excessive relative to colony needs; and prophylactic treatment versus integrated varroa management affects both colony health and individual bee wellbeing. Wild bee welfare is primarily a habitat and pesticide issue. Supporting both wild bee conservation and higher-welfare beekeeping serves individual bee welfare as well as ecosystem resilience.
