Refinement in laboratory animal welfare has advanced considerably in recent decades, driven by both ethical imperatives and the recognition that stressed, suffering animals produce less reliable and reproducible research data. Key advances include the shift from barren to enriched housing for rodents, the adoption of social housing that meets natural behavioural needs, improved anaesthesia and analgesia protocols informed by validated pain assessment tools, and less invasive sampling techniques that reduce procedural stress. Institutional animal care and use committees have become more rigorous in requiring justification for procedures and in mandating pain management. The tension in refinement is always between the scientific need for controlled conditions and the welfare need for environmental complexity and social interaction — modern research design is increasingly demonstrating that these goals are compatible rather than contradictory.
