Animal welfare in the Global South presents distinct challenges requiring approaches different from those in high-income countries. Resource constraints, limited veterinary infrastructure, reliance on working animals, and different cultural relationships with animals all shape the welfare landscape. Effective intervention requires engagement with local communities, building on existing animal care traditions, and addressing welfare alongside livelihoods rather than in opposition to them. International welfare organisations are increasingly shifting toward community-based, culturally respectful approaches that improve animal welfare while respecting local knowledge and needs.
