Hamster welfare is poorly understood by most owners and dramatically misrepresented by the pet industry. Commercial cages sold as suitable are typically far too small, providing inadequate space for the high locomotor activity hamsters require. Most owners are unaware that Syrian hamsters are obligate solitaries whose forced cohabitation causes severe stress. Substrate depth for burrowing — a core behavioral need — is almost universally insufficient. The welfare gap between typical pet hamster conditions and species-appropriate requirements is among the largest of any common companion animal, making owner education the most impactful welfare intervention.
