Ferret adrenal disease in North America represents a man-made welfare epidemic caused by industry-standard neutering practices implemented without adequate understanding of ferret endocrinology. Early neutering disrupts the hormonal feedback loop that regulates adrenal function, predisposing the majority of affected animals to debilitating adrenal tumours. The welfare solution is clear from the European experience: later neutering or hormonal implants produce dramatically better health outcomes. Changing the industry practice requires education of both breeders and veterinarians, as well as consumer awareness about the health implications of purchasing early-neutered ferrets.
