Tortoises can live for decades, outliving their owners, and require specific environmental conditions that are frequently misunderstood by pet keepers.
Tortoises are deceptively demanding pets whose needs are often underestimated. Their slow pace and apparent stoicism mask complex physiological requirements. Outdoor access with natural sunlight and grazing on appropriate plant species is ideal for most temperate species. Indoor housing must provide high-quality UVB lighting and correct temperature gradients. Inappropriate diets — particularly fruit-heavy or protein-rich food — damage kidneys and cause shell deformities. Tortoises are also social animals to varying degrees, and solitary confinement in a featureless enclosure is poor welfare. Given their longevity, owners must plan for lifetime care including succession arrangements.
