Multiple countries have banned mink farming on welfare grounds, but the global fur industry continues with significant animal suffering in remaining producer countries.
The science of mink welfare is unusually clear: mink are highly motivated to swim, hunt, and occupy territories of several square kilometers. Commercial cage farming, which confines mink in wire cages roughly 30x90cm for their entire lives, is fundamentally incompatible with meeting these needs. The behavioral evidence — high rates of stereotypic behavior, self-mutilation, infanticide, and chronic stress indicators — demonstrates that standard commercial mink farming causes significant suffering. Bans in several European countries represent genuine welfare progress. However, global fur production has partially shifted to countries with fewer protections, meaning the total burden of suffering continues. Consumer choice, import bans on fur, and industry campaigns targeting luxury brands are the remaining levers for change.
