The welfare case for slower-growing broiler breeds is among the clearest in farm animal science. Conventional fast-growing breeds have been selected to such an extreme for growth rate that their skeletal, cardiovascular, and immune systems struggle to cope with their rapid weight gain. Leg disorders affect a majority of standard broilers, causing pain that compromises mobility and access to resources. Cardiovascular disease causes significant mortality. Switching to slower-growing breeds — which live healthier, more mobile lives even if more briefly — is a straightforward welfare improvement. The European Chicken Commitment, which includes breed change alongside stocking density, enrichment, and controlled atmosphere stunning requirements, represents a comprehensive welfare improvement package. Consumer and retailer pressure is the primary driver of industry adoption.
