Parasite resistance poses a growing challenge to dog welfare and veterinary medicine. As resistance spreads, treatments that once reliably prevented heartworm, controlled fleas, or eliminated intestinal worms become less effective, leaving dogs vulnerable to preventable illness. At the same time, routine prophylactic treatment of all dogs regardless of actual parasite burden wastes medication and accelerates resistance development. A more targeted approach — using diagnostic testing to identify actual parasite burden before treating — is better for individual welfare, slows resistance, and reduces unnecessary drug exposure. Breed-specific genetic susceptibility to certain antiparasitics also demands individualized treatment planning.
