Moving beyond the absence of suffering to actively measuring positive welfare states — like play, exploration, and positive social interaction — represents a significant advance in farm animal welfare science.
The traditional welfare framework focused on minimizing suffering — reducing disease, injury, fear, and frustration. This remains essential, but it sets too low a bar. An animal can be free from obvious suffering while still experiencing a life of tedium, lack of agency, and deprivation of positive experiences. The concept of positive welfare asks: is the animal experiencing pleasure, curiosity, play, and positive social interaction? Positive welfare indicators — play behavior, willing approach to humans, positive vocalizations, exploration of novel objects — are increasingly incorporated into welfare assessment frameworks. They provide a more complete picture of animal lives and set a higher standard for what constitutes acceptable animal husbandry.
