Adequate water access is fundamental to pig welfare, yet water restriction through inadequate trough space, faulty drinkers, or inadequate flow rates is a common and often overlooked welfare problem on commercial pig farms.
Water is the most critical nutrient for all animals, and restriction even for hours causes measurable suffering. Pig farms with inadequate drinker provision or malfunctioning drinkers create welfare emergencies that are often invisible to routine inspection because pigs that are chronically under-watered may appear behaviorally normal until stress becomes severe. Flow rate is as important as drinker number: a technically compliant drinker ratio means nothing if each drinker delivers water at half the required flow rate. Welfare audits must include flow rate testing alongside drinker count. In hot weather, proactive management of water provision becomes even more critical, as dehydration rapidly leads to heat stress with cascading welfare consequences.
