Poultry slaughter welfare varies enormously between industrial and small-scale facilities. Large processing plants are required to have full-time official veterinary presence, but small abattoirs may have infrequent inspection. However, small and on-farm facilities also have potential welfare advantages: shorter transport distances, smaller batch sizes that reduce crowding and competition, and slower throughput lines that allow more careful stunning and killing. On-farm slaughter — where legal — eliminates transport entirely, which is significant given that transport is one of the most stressful events in a poultry birds life. Welfare-focused small-scale poultry production should prioritize on-farm or nearby slaughter, validated stunning, and staff training in welfare assessment.
