Bearded dragons are popular pets but have specific UVB, temperature, and dietary requirements that are frequently unmet, causing chronic suffering in captive individuals.
Bearded dragons sold as low-maintenance beginner reptiles often suffer from inadequate husbandry that owners do not realize is causing harm. Metabolic bone disease from insufficient UVB causes pain and skeletal deformity; impaction from ingested loose substrate causes gut obstruction and death; inadequate temperature gradients prevent proper digestion and immune function. These welfare harms are entirely preventable with proper setup. Reptile-specialist veterinarians and evidence-based care resources have transformed our understanding of bearded dragon needs, but this knowledge has not yet reached all owners.
