Litter box management is a critical but often overlooked aspect of cat welfare. Poor design and hygiene are among the top causes of inappropriate elimination and urinary disease in cats.
Litter box problems are the most common behavioral complaint of cat owners, yet they are almost universally caused by management failures rather than behavioral disorders. Cats have evolved strong preferences for elimination substrate and location. When these preferences are not met, cats experience stress, may suppress urination, and develop associated health problems including feline idiopathic cystitis. Adequate provision — sufficient boxes, appropriate size, preferred litter type, and proper placement away from food and high-traffic areas — prevents most elimination problems and protects both feline welfare and the human-animal bond.
