The gestation crate phase-out is one of the most significant farm animal welfare achievements of the 21st century, driven by ballot initiatives, corporate commitments, and regulatory change. But progress is uneven: many corporate commitments have been delayed or quietly abandoned; states without bans still house millions of sows in individual stalls; and verification of supplier compliance remains weak. The welfare impact of full implementation would be enormous — affecting 6 million sows in the US alone. Sustained pressure on corporate commitment follow-through and state-level legislation remains essential.
