Welfare Considerations

The colourful, passive appearance of fish in tanks conceals complex needs for appropriate temperature, water chemistry, social companions, swimming space, and environmental complexity. Stressed fish show faded colouration, reduced activity, abnormal swimming patterns, and immune suppression. The welfare minimum for any aquarium fish includes a cycled, appropriately sized tank, species-appropriate water parameters, and compatible tankmates. Responsible purchasing — avoiding cyanide-caught marines, opting for captive-bred species — also reduces upstream harm.
