Freshwater fish face an array of welfare threats from pollution, habitat degradation, and invasive species. Understanding these helps target conservation action toward outcomes that benefit individual animals as well as populations.
Freshwater fish welfare in natural systems is inseparable from habitat quality and ecosystem integrity. The stressors they face — hypoxia, temperature extremes, pollution, parasites from invasive species — cause individual suffering at a scale that dwarfs the attention given to them. Unlike terrestrial wildlife, the suffering of individual fish in degraded waterways is largely invisible. River restoration, agricultural buffer zones, invasive species control, and reduced abstraction all improve habitat conditions in ways that directly benefit fish welfare as well as biodiversity.
