Bat populations worldwide face threats from white-nose syndrome, wind turbine collisions, roost destruction, and pesticide use — yet bats remain poorly understood and underprotected relative to their ecological importance and welfare needs.
Bats experience genuine suffering during white-nose syndrome mortality events — they starve slowly over weeks during hibernation disruption, a prolonged and distressing death. Wind turbine barotrauma causes acute internal haemorrhage that may not cause immediate death, potentially leaving bats injured. Roost destruction during maternity season separates mothers and pups, causing starvation of dependent young. The welfare case for protecting bats is strong both because they can suffer significantly and because they provide irreplaceable ecosystem services that benefit other animals and humans. Their slow reproduction makes welfare-related mortality especially damaging to population recovery.
