Precision livestock farming technologies including sensors, cameras, and AI systems are increasingly able to monitor individual animal welfare indicators — offering both genuine welfare improvements and risks of technology being used to mask rather than address welfare problems.
Precision livestock farming technologies have genuine welfare potential — early detection of lameness, disease, and abnormal behaviour can reduce the duration of suffering significantly. However, technology is a tool, not a solution. Sensors that detect a lame cow only improve welfare if a stockperson responds promptly and treats the animal effectively. There is also a risk that precision farming data is used to demonstrate welfare compliance without underlying improvement — producing better records without better outcomes. The welfare value of precision technology is conditional on the human and institutional systems around it, and on whether welfare improvement rather than welfare monitoring is the actual goal.
