Dehorning and disbudding represent a widespread, largely preventable welfare problem in dairy and beef cattle. The procedures are performed for legitimate safety reasons — horned cattle cause injury to each other and to handlers — but the solution most commonly applied (physical horn removal) causes significant pain that is routinely undertreated. Research consistently shows that thermal disbudding without local anaesthetic causes acute pain responses persisting for hours, with cortisol elevation and behavioural pain indicators that analgesic treatment substantially reduces. The welfare-first approach prioritises three strategies: using analgesics for all procedures where horns must be removed, transitioning to polled genetics through selective breeding so the procedure is unnecessary, and ensuring certification schemes mandate analgesic use as a non-negotiable standard.
