Precision livestock farming represents a genuine welfare opportunity: technology that detects health problems earlier than human observation allows treatment before suffering becomes severe. A sensor detecting subtle gait changes indicative of early lameness enables treatment within hours rather than the days or weeks that may pass before the same lameness becomes obvious to a stockperson in a large herd. The welfare benefit of early detection is substantial: early-stage lameness is far more treatable, less painful, and less likely to become chronic than lameness detected after weeks of deterioration. This principle applies across welfare domains — early mastitis detection, calving assistance timing, and stress monitoring all offer welfare improvements through earlier intervention. The limitation is that technology supplements but cannot replace stockperson skill, animal welfare knowledge, and the human judgement that acts on the data it provides.
