Dogs bred for extreme small size carry disproportionate rates of skeletal abnormalities, dental problems from jaws too small for a full complement of teeth, neurological conditions including hydrocephalus, and hypoglycaemia risk from insufficient fat reserves. The market for teacup and micro variants — dogs bred to be smaller than the breed standard — intensifies these problems by selecting for an extreme that compounds existing health vulnerabilities.
